Elijah Is More Than Just a Word — Children’s Book

Media Movement Network collaborated with student author Aiyanah Reed to bring Elijah Is More Than Just a Word to life, an illustrated children’s book created for her senior capstone project at Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York.

Inspired by Aiyanah’s younger cousin, Elijah, who has autism, the book introduces young readers to his experiences, personality, interests, and unique ways of interacting with the world.

Told from Elijah’s perspective, the story explores friendship, sensory experiences, routines, self-expression, and the importance of understanding and accepting differences.

Illustration & Visual Storytelling

MMN developed the book’s visual presentation through custom character artwork, colorful illustrations, and coordinated page designs.

The illustrations portray Elijah in familiar environments and imaginative scenarios, combining everyday experiences with playful storytelling.

The artwork uses expressive characters, vibrant colors, and engaging compositions to help younger readers connect with the story.

Graphic Design & Book Layout

MMN provided the graphic design and editorial layout, integrating the illustrations, photography, and written narrative into a cohesive children’s book.

The design incorporates typography, page composition, and visual continuity to create a consistent reading experience.

In addition to the book, MMN designed a coordinating bookmark to extend the project’s visual identity into a complementary printed product.

A Story of Understanding and Acceptance

At its heart, Elijah Is More Than Just a Word encourages children to recognize that differences should be understood, respected, and celebrated.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and illustration can help a young author’s personal story become an accessible and meaningful creative work.
